How to draw EYES better:

Drawing: Pencil-Holding, Warm-up Exercises, and simple shapes & forms

This week, we will be learning how to draw people.

To lay a proper foundation for drawing people (or anything, really), we need to go over the basics….

  • How to hold your pencil
  • How to draw LIGHTLY
  • How to move from your shoulder
  • Warm-up exercises (very helpful!)
  • How to draw simple shapes
  • Learning to SEE simple shapes in everything.
  • Simple forms (3 dimensional simple shapes).
  • How to BUILD your drawing with simple shapes

We will then move on to more detailed work such as…

  • shading
  • hair texture
  • facial features – eyes, noses, lips, eyebrows (expressions)
  • Human body proportions (start with simple shapes and refine)

Then comes the actual PROJECT…

Draw a portrait, full body character, or make up your own character (portrait or full body).

You will need to CHOOSE a character to draw or make one up. Before starting on the actual project, you will need to have your character APPROVED by me.

Anime, celebrities, family members, etc. are some examples you can choose from. Your drawing will need to be either fully shaded with pencil or with art markers if you have them and choose to use them.

Get Better at Drawing:

Friday Review of the Week + Daily Drop Cap + Daily Monster

Today we looked at two “personal side projects” made by two graphic designers/illustrators that became big hits.

The first one we looked at was Daily Drop Cap by Jessica Hische (http://www.dailydropcap.com) . This was part of the inspiration for our block lettering project. We talked about Jessica’s journey from fine art into graphic design, illustration, and lettering. Below are some samples of her Daily Drop Cap alphabets that can now be bought as posters and prints on her website (http://www.jessicahische.is).

The second side project we looked at was Daily Monster by Stefan G. Bucher.  I’ve posted an example below along with a video we watched in class. You can check out the website here –> http://www.dailymonster.com .

Life Inspires Art – Videos & Articles

Inspiration

Art is often talked about as being “inspired”.

Example: “I was inspired to draw this.”

Art is also talked about as being “inspiring”.

Example: “That painting/music/movie is so inspiring.”

What are you inspired by?

I am personally inspired by many things in life — books, movies, art, music, creation, etc. In the few weeks we have left of the trimester, I want us to be thinking about how you find inspiration to make art, and how that inspiration is incorporated into your artwork.

Class discussion examples:

  • Van Gogh & mustaches
  • Soulful music
  • thoughts & emotions
  • the Iron Nun
  • photographers / artists / designers on Instagram
  • Food/cooking instagram accounts

HOMEWORK:

Write in your sketchbook a list of at least 3 things that inspire you.

Does art give glory to God? How?

And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Col. 3:17

Work willingly at whatever you do, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people. Remember that the Lord will give you an inheritance as your reward, and that the Master you are serving is Christ. Col. 3:23-24

So whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God. 1 Corin. 10:31

How can you use art to glorify God?
