Drawing: Pencil-Holding, Warm-up Exercises, and simple shapes & forms

This week, we will be learning how to draw people.

To lay a proper foundation for drawing people (or anything, really), we need to go over the basics….

  • How to hold your pencil
  • How to draw LIGHTLY
  • How to move from your shoulder
  • Warm-up exercises (very helpful!)
  • How to draw simple shapes
  • Learning to SEE simple shapes in everything.
  • Simple forms (3 dimensional simple shapes).
  • How to BUILD your drawing with simple shapes

We will then move on to more detailed work such as…

  • shading
  • hair texture
  • facial features – eyes, noses, lips, eyebrows (expressions)
  • Human body proportions (start with simple shapes and refine)

Then comes the actual PROJECT…

Draw a portrait, full body character, or make up your own character (portrait or full body).

You will need to CHOOSE a character to draw or make one up. Before starting on the actual project, you will need to have your character APPROVED by me.

Anime, celebrities, family members, etc. are some examples you can choose from. Your drawing will need to be either fully shaded with pencil or with art markers if you have them and choose to use them.
